PM Narendra Modi lays foundation stone for NTPC Green Energy Limited Green Hydrogen Hub Project at Pudimadaka, near Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh
The first Green Hydrogen Hub under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The project entails an investment of approx. ₹1,85,000 Crore including investment in 20 GW renewable energy capacities, making it one of India’s largest integrated green hydrogen production facilities.

India added 24.5 GW of new solar power capacity in 2024, the highest ever achieved any year
According to JMK Research: In 2024, India added ~24.5 GW of solar and ~3.4 GW of wind capacity representing a ~2x rise in solar installations compared to that of 12.8 GW in 2023 and a ~1.21x increase in wind installations compared to 2023. Notably, 2024 is the highest recorded total solar capacity added than in any previous year.

PM Suryaghar initiative has surpassed 8.5 lakh (850000) rooftop installations
Making progress toward the goal of powering 10 Mn households with solar energy, Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Prahlad Joshi informed. He added, “The government aims to achieve 500 GW of RE by 2030, with long-term vision of 1,800 GW RE by 2047.”

India’s Finance Minister presented the Financial Year 2025-26 budget to parliament. The budget introduced a slew of measures for RE and power sector
spanning power sector reforms, nuclear energy development, clean technology manufacturing, lithium-ion battery production and tariff reduction to boost domestic manufacturing. INR 26,549 Crore has been allocated to MNRE, up 53.48% from the last year’s budget. Solar energy will receive ~91% of this allocation, primarily to implement PM Suryaghar Yojana.

India’s installed solar capacity reached 100 GW
solar sector has seen a 3450% increase in capacity over the past decade, rising from 2.82 GW in 2014 to 100 GW in 2025. There is 84.10 GW of solar capacity under implementation and another 47.49 GW under tendering.

Indian government has enhanced the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) target to 14,000 MWh from earlier 4,000 MWh as storage prices have dropped.
The Ministry of Power has issued an advisory to all states and implementing agencies to award all the BESS contracts under Viability Gap Funding (VGF) program by June 2025 so that installations can be completed by May 2027.

Government Announces ₹54 Billion VGF for Battery Storage Under Second Tranche
Indian Ministry of Power has announced new tranche of viability gap funding (VGF) to support battery energy storage systems (BESS) development in India. Under this tranche, a VGF of INR 1.8 million ($ 21,043)/MWh will be provided to support development of 30 GWh of BESS capacity with a total financial outlay of INR 54 billion ($ 631.30 million).

India has submitted its 4th Biennial Update Report (BUR-4) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
India reported a 7.93% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2020 compared to 2019, primarily due to COVID-related reduction in economic activity. The energy sector contributed 75.66% of total emissions, while other land-use activities sequestered ~522 million tonnes of CO2, reducing total emissions by 22%.

RBI Increases Priority Sector Lending Cap for Renewables to ₹350 Million
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has increased the lending limit for the renewable energy sector to USD 4.08 million in its new guidelines for priority sector lending (PSL) set to take effect from April 1, 2025. PSL is a lending requirement administered by the RBI, requiring banks to give a minimum proportion of their loans to sectors of development importance or the sectors that have difficulty getting loans and RE sector is included in this policy.

India establishes carbon market with new offset mechanism for climate action
After the government had notified the Carbon Credit Scheme in June 2023, it has approved a detailed procedure for offset mechanism for eight different segments, including for RE, GH2 production, industrial efficiency, landfill methane recovery and mangrove afforestation and reforestation. Through which, entities can earn carbon credits. This, according to research firm, Wood Mackenzie, is expected to improve credit quality and lead to a rise in carbon offset prices.

According to Air Quality Life Index 2025 by the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago (EPIC), Delhi residents losing 8.2 years of their lives to high air pollution
“These levels are more than 8 times higher than the WHO guideline, and reducing them to permanently meet the WHO Guideline would add 3.5 years to the average life expectancy of Indians,” said the report. It added that people of Delhi were the worst impacted across the country.
